John is a multi-instrumentalist renowned for his versatility on both guitar and bass. Whether he’s performing lead, serving as a sideman, or delivering captivating solos, he seamlessly transitions between roles, even switching effortlessly between wood bass and electric bass. His two albums feature numerous original compositions that showcase his musical exploration and creativity.John began playing guitar and bass in his teens and further honed his craft at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Influenced by the styles of Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian, he developed a deep appreciation for jazz. He later performed with prominent musicians such as Leroy Vinegar and John Coates, Jr. in the vibrant jazz scenes of Portland and New York City.Since 2003, John has collaborated with jazz singer Yuko, performing in duo and trio settings. In Portland, he was active as a jazz guitarist and wood bass player, contributing to Craig Schnasel’s album Jazz4tet. After moving to Tokyo, he became a regular performer at high-end hotels in Nihonbashi, Roppongi, and Ginza, as well as at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club.With the experience and network he has built over the years, John continues to enjoy meeting new musicians and sharing his passion for music with audiences around the world.
